Weeks 4/5/6

Ok so I'm testing this blog using the Blogger app on my iPhone as I'm struggling to get on a computer in the evening and getting pics off my phone is laborious if I can do it all off the phone.
Week 4 I didn't go to class due to work commitments so with my gas mask on at home I took out all the stitching from the old material ready for week 5! I cut out all the new material with plenty of margin:

I then proceeded to stitch the top part of the chair cover but as my sewing skills on the machine were at bit rusty one side was perfect and the other wonky. Like my eye make-up you can never get it to match. Anyway after taking it apart and re-doing I finally got there:

It was last week that I finally finished the top and also did my cushion cover:

So this week I need to put in a zip for the cushion (purchased) and move to the sides which will be tricky to say the least! Final state and it doesn't look like much progress but I'm getting there!!!

Upholstery - part 3

No much progress but slowly it's looking a bit better than it was!!! I did my first bit of sewing today which was great fun! So I had to staple on some foam and fabric and you get a sneak peak of the material a bought on the weekend...
And I glued some more foam on but as it has to be stretched I'll have to do it in stages...

It's coming along nicely...
Stay tuned!

Upholstery - part 2

I went to pick up my foam... the orginial stuff was gassing me out in the car (my storage for this project) and picked it up from Livedale Foam in Farnsworth... the staff are really helpful and have sorted me out even when I lost a piece! They copy the original and two days later I have fresh smelling foam!

So the current state of the chair looks like this:

Ok so not much progress this week as I'm still hunting around for the right material... Which is along the lines of this:

And this:

However this is Next fabric at the "bargain" price of £20 a meter and waiting time of 3 weeks. Not really an option. So instead I'm off to the Bankrupt Shop in Preston - the name being quite fitting for the amount of money I'm spending on this project:
- chair on ebay - £35
- upholstery classes - £55 (for 4 months)
- new foam - £45
- glue & accessories - £5

On the positive note our course tutor said this chair in a good original state was fetching £600 at an antique stall. So maybe I don't feel that bad after all.

Upholstery

I have signed up for an upholstery course. I love doing things like this and a bit of creativity is always stimulating! So I went on ebay in search of a chair and found this retro 60s egg chair and fell in love:

Obviously its in a state and certainly not worth the £35 I paid for... however... I am committed now...
As I started taking it apart my faith wavered ever so slightly...
A wavered some more...
And hit rock bottom around about here:
However after getting rid of all the old material and foam I could finally breathe... I've sanded it down and ordered some foam...

Await the transformation...

freedom of expression wins!

So glad that the stink re: Max Mosley has been overuled. In this case I'm all for freedom of expression. If Max Mosley decides to do a bit of naughty on the side he has to live with the fact that being a person in the public eye it could get published one day. And why should he be ashamed unless he shouldn't have been doing it in the first place? Not that I'm that interested in his intimate life in the first place...
But one person shouldn't want to change the press in UK regulates itself. It's not a perfect system but then why read the News of the World...

The Kindle

How exciting... I've just myself a new Kindle!!! I love it already, though I'm struggling with some of its features... like managing books. Then again the way it downloads to your Kindle from Amazon at lightening speed is AMAZING!!! I'm in love. Now I've had a Sony Reader for 2 years (currently selling on ebay) and while it was good - the Kindle blows it out the water... I think my partner will now have to resign to the fact there there will be little conversation between us!! Opps...
